IELTS General and IELTS Academic Test Format

There are four modules in IELTS test

IELTS LISTENING TEST

It is a 30 minute test of 40 questions with 4 sections. In this test, you will be asked to listen to pre-recorded CD-ROM audio tapes and a number of questions will be asked from what you listen. These conversations are related to our daily life.

The voices you hear will be from Australia, British, New Zealand, or North American accents.

Section 1 : you will hear a conversation between two people set in an everyday social context. (for example, a conversation in an accommodation agency). You will have to use your comprehension.

 

Section 2 : you will hear a monologue set in an everyday social context. (for example, a talk about meals for a conference or a speech about local facilities)

 

Section 3 : you will hear a conversation between 3 to 4 people set in an educational context or training context. (for example, a university tutor and a student discussing an assignment, or a group of students planning a research project)

 

Section 4 : you will hear a monologue on an academic subject. (for example, a university lecture)

Revised version of IELTS Listening Test Format:

British Council announced that there will be a minor update in Instructions and Layout of the Paper based IELTS Listening Test which would be executed from January 2020 onwards.

The minor changes include: a) “SECTION” is replaced to “PARTS”, b) There will be no SECTION 1 example henceforth, c) There will be no PAGE NUMBER references

IELTS READING TEST

It is a 60 minute test of 40 questions with various types which tests your reading skill. There are totally 3 sections and the total text length you will have to read is 2,150 to 2,750.

IELTS Academic Reading test

There are three sections in the academic reading test and each section contains one long text. The passages which are to be read are taken from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers. The topics are on academic topics of general interest written for a non-specialist audience. The texts are appropriate to UG and PG courses or those who are seeking professional registration. These texts range from the descriptive and factual to the discursive and analytical. These texts might contain graphs, diagrams or illustrations. A simple glossary is provided for the technical terms.

IELTS General Training Reading test

There are three sections. The text used here is taken from newspapers, company handbooks, official documents, notices, magazines, advertisements, books.

Section 1 : you will have to read 2 or 3 short factual texts in which one may be made up of 6 to 8 short texts related to the topic. (for example, hotel advertisements) the topics are relevant to conversations in everyday life in an English-speaking country.

 

Section 2 : you will have to read 2 factual short texts which deals with work related issues (for example, for applying jobs, workplace facilities, company policies, staff development and training, pay and conditions).

 

Section 3 : you will have to read one longer text, and more complex text on a topic of general interest.

The skills assessed in IELTS Reading Test is:

IELTS WRITING TEST

It is a 60 minute test and consists of two tasks. Task one is of 20 minutes and tasks two is of 40 minutes. You will have to write 150 words for task one and 250 words for task two.

IELTS Academic Writing test

There are 2 tasks:

 

In the task 1 you will have to describe, summarize or explain the information in your own words from the chart, graph, diagram, or table presented to you. You should also explain the data, describe the stages of how something works or describe an event.

 

In the task 2, you will be given an argument or a problem and you will have to present your point of view to the problem and give a solution to it and can give challenging ideas to solve the problem.

IELTS General Training Writing test

The topics are of general interest. In task 1, you will have to write a letter requesting information or explaining the situation or give opinions or express likes and dislikes for the situation presented.

 

In task 2, you will have to write an essay to present a solution or give ideas based on the situation given.

The skills assessed in IELTS Writing test is:

IELTS SPEAKING TEST

This test is of 11-14 minutes. There are three sections.

Section 1 : This test is of 4-5 minutes and it is all about introduction. The examiner will introduce himself and you will have to introduce yourself next to confirm your identity. Then you will have to answer for general questions on topics like home, work, studies, family etc.

 

Section 2 : This test is of 3-4 minutes and you will have to talk about a particular topic by choosing the task card given by the examiner. You will have one minute to prepare and make notes. Then you have to talk for about 1-2 minutes. The examiner will ask you questions based on the same topic.

 

Section 3 : This test is of 4-5 minutes and the examiner will ask you some more questions related to the topic section 2. These questions are asked so that you get more abstract ideas.
